That's exactly how long I lasted on this earth without ever officially being "offered" drugs.  I have seen people with drugs and I've seen their paraphernalia, but I had not been actually offered any.  That is, until I stepped foot on Jamaica last Tuesday.  Bri and I were off the boat for 7 minutes, not even in town yet, when a cab driver asked us if we wanted to smoke and showed us a joint.  When we turned it down, he seemed surprised!

Anyway, after getting past that, we walked in to town to do a little shopping.  However, unless you like being hassled about every little thing you pick up or look at, DO NOT SHOP IN JAMAICA.  It was crazy how the people followed and stared while we browsed each store.  We looked through a few stores and decided that it was just too shady and dangerous looking and took off back to the ship.

On the way back, I was offered weed AGAIN from a different cabbie!  His offer was classic, though.  I'll attempt to transcribe what was said.

"Hey, mon, need a ride?  I can take you to the beach, give you a lift to town?  smoke?"

Nothing too crazy or extravagant, just a subtle little offer thrown into his cabbie spiel.  It was actually more hilarious than surprising at that point.

Once back on the boat, it turned out to be my favorite day of the cruise (which I'll talk more about in a different blog, probably.)  We had the ship nearly to ourselves and the weather was fantastic.  Beautiful, hot sun that we laid out and ate ice cream in.  No sounds other than the ocean splashing around us.  It was spectacular.  I want to go back to the Caribbean.  Now.

so

Apparently Jamaica is 100% stereotypes.

The first (actually only) time I was offered drugs was when I was 18, during a Coolio concert at Lollapalooza. The person I was with partook, I passed the dutchie (actually pipe).

Re: so

Hmm...did you pass it to your "left-hand side?"

Incidentally, I think my time frame was about the same as Jeff's...mine was like 27 years, 4 months. I was in California for a conference, went to a party the last night in San Fran at someone's house not knowing that half of them planned on smoking pot all night.

What a fun evening to spend sitting on the back patio away from the smoke (hellooooo pregnant woman doesn't want to sit in the smoke filled room) until we took a cab back to the hotel at 4am. Blech.

Man, I like feel so totally left out. I've only been offered alcohol underage. I'm such a loser.

Did you have to think about the PSA commercials on how to turn down drugs? Did you feel lost because your parents never talked to you about drugs?

The best response I heard was this week when some kid said, "The only thing I'll smoke is you on a basketball court." LOL
